Having trouble figuring out what backpack fits your needs? Overwhelmed by all of the different types and brands available? Here, you will find a breakdown of different types of backpacks, including the best uses for each one and a couple of links to a few that I like.
1. Exterior Frame Backpacking
These packs are ideal for overnight backpacking trips over semi-regular terrain. The benefit to using this style over an interior frame pack is that things can be tied to the top and bottom of the frame. This design features a frame which overhangs from the cloth enclosed portion. This is a good place to tie on a sleeping bag or even a tent. I like to attach my tent to the top of the frame with my sleeping bag on bottom, and a collapsible stool on the back end. Personally, these backpacks are a couple that I like.

2. Interior Frame Backpacking
I prefer this style for all backpacking trips. My favorite thing about it is that all of your gear is enclosed. This style allows for more rigorous hiking. Interior framed packs are my choice for warmer weather backpacking trips because you can fit a hammock and a small bed roll inside. They are also more narrow than an exterior frame backpack, allowing you to fit through tighter spaces and maintain a lower center of gravity. This aids in balance for the more extreme hikers. Most interior frame packs can hold enough equipment for a 2 day trip, sometimes 3 if you pack light and there is good weather. These are a few that I recommend.

3. Day Pack
A day pack is a small backpack. This is used for short hikes when dump camping, where you will be away from your campsite for a few hours and you need to bring some of your gear with you. When I go on longer camping trips, I like to bring a small day bag with me or sometimes a Camelbak with extra pockets. That way, I can carry things such as water, a compass, a small first aid kit, and also some snacks. Day packs also make good hunting backpacks because they are versatile, generally water resistant, and have pockets for easy access to anything you may need. Here are a few that I like.

4. Hydration Pack
I love hydration packs! I personally use a CamelBak hydration pack with extra storage pockets so that I can also use it as a day pack. Hydration packs are good for hiking because they make it so that water bottles are not necessary because of their hydration bladder. A hydration bladder is the water reservoir that sits within the designated pocket. There are a few different styles of CamelBak including one that is only a water bladder puch and some that have varying amounts of storage. These are my favorite day packs for hikes through mountainous or irregular terrain, and they help keep me hydrated and prepared for whatever I may encounter. Including CamelBak packs, these are a couple that I enjoy.
