Electrolytes Matter, Not Just Water
Most people head out in warm weather thinking about one thing: water. And that’s a good start. But if you’re sweating for hours, water alone isn’t the full solution.
When you sweat, you’re not just losing fluids. You’re losing sodium and other electrolytes your body relies on to keep muscles working and energy steady. Ignore that, and you start to feel it.
At first, it’s subtle. You feel a little off. Maybe your pace slows down more than expected. Then it builds. Fatigue creeps in, your legs feel heavier, maybe a headache starts. For some people, it turns into cramps or lightheadedness. That’s not just being tired. That’s your body running low on what it needs to function.
The tricky part is that drinking more water won’t fix it. In some cases, it can actually make you feel worse if you’re diluting what little sodium you have left.
So what should you do?
Start simple. If it’s warm and you expect to sweat, plan to replace electrolytes along the way. That can be as easy as:
Adding an electrolyte mix to one of your water bottles
Bringing along salty snacks like trail mix, jerky, or crackers
Alternating between plain water and something with electrolytes
You don’t need to overthink it or turn your pack into a science kit. You just need to stay ahead of the problem instead of reacting to it.
When does it matter most?
Hot, humid days
Long hikes with sustained effort
Steep terrain where you’re working harder
Trips where you’re sweating consistently for hours
On short, easy outings, water is usually enough. But once the heat and effort go up, electrolytes start to matter more.
A simple way to think about it
If you’re sweating enough that your shirt is soaked or you’re reaching for water often, it’s time to think beyond just hydration.
The goal isn’t to be perfect. It’s to stay steady. When your body has both water and electrolytes, your energy stays more consistent, your recovery is better, and the whole hike feels easier.
It’s a small adjustment, but it makes a noticeable difference, especially in the heat.
